Soul Songs: The American Negro Spiritual, its meanings, teachings and the sustaining power of faith.
Born out of extreme adversity and cruel ignorance, the American Negro Spiritual faithfully remains the only good thing to have come from our country’s darkest days, when the stain of slavery proliferated our daily lives. These Soulsongs, as they are often called, were the sustenance and salvation for millions of African captives. Some are work songs, born in the fields to pass the time. Some are lamentations, others jubilations, and some encode secrets and safe ways that led to freedom. All are expressions of faith, resilience, and hope. They remain a testament to those who carried them and the profound faith that birthed them. Join us on SUNDAY, AUGUST 24th as we take a deeper dive into the waters of this remarkable, African-American musical tradition with James Martin and Bradley Hull in an interactive service celebrating the soul of a people and the enduring sound of our emerging Republic.
JAMES MARTIN has won critical acclaim for his performances in opera, musical theater, and concert as a versatile singer, actor, and entertainer. Always an audience favorite, his artistic repertoire spans from Bach to be-bop, Busoni to Burleigh, and Berg to Bernstein. He has appeared with leading musical organizations throughout the United States and abroad, most recently he toured Taiwan and Thailand with frequent collaborator Lynn Raley. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and his Master of Music from the Juilliard School. Most recently, he has released a critically-acclaimed album titled “Wide as Heaven: A Century of Song by Black American Composers.” James and Brad performed for the Concerts on Colonial series this past May.

OCTOBER 18: GET THIS WORKSHOP ON YOUR CALENDAR
A workshop titled “Opening Our Hearts, Transforming Our Losses” is being presented from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 18, at our church.
Led by Rev. Ruth Ward, the interactive workshop will give participants the opportunity to name their loss - not only death of a loved one but retirement, losing a job, having to move - as well as claim our feelings and creatively relate to others who are on a different but similar journey.
Rev. Ward, who has expertise in loss and has experienced it personally, will encourage us to define grief, explore feelings, realize our connectedness and experience growth. Members of the congregation and friends, families and neighbors are invited to participate.
More information on the workshop, offered through the Nurture committee, will appear in the September newsletter.
